“Our planet is experiencing numerous anthropogenic changes due to our continuous consumption of natural resources, and because of this, even human health is affected since it does not simply refer to the presence or absence of illness, but it also refers to the effects of the surroundings towards one’s self. The emergence of the concept of Planetary Health serves as a reminder for us that we must start adapting a holistic approach when it comes to solving our environmental crisis. Along with the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), issues on food security, public nutrition, and environmental health can and must be paid attention to.
Planetary health is considered as one of the newer sciences, and because developing countries such as the Philippines are just starting to adapt the planetary health approach, presently there are gaps in local research and literature with regards to this concept. Through this study, the researchers aim to collate different literature on the topic of the food-health-environment (FHE) nexus and produce a narrative review, and a Philippine-apt framework. The latter will be refined based on the opinions of Filipino academics invited to take part in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) regarding the FHE nexus under a planetary health context.
These methods are used to ensure that the researchers have been able to gather much information that may be beneficial to the formulation of a FHE Nexus framework that is tailored towards and is applicable to a local setting. The resulting framework can then be used by future researchers or policy makers to form mitigative solutions and actions regarding the issues affecting the local food-health-environment nexus.
